Way back in the twenties and early thirties, the old road from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth cut through this property. The farm became a popular outspan for Woodcutters hauling their loads to the small harbour at Storms River Mouth for export and further transportation.

In 1936 the Anderson's bought the property for business development. They started a post office, bank agency, grocery store, café and later a service station. Their Roadhouse featured eight rooms, a bath and a "long drop"! This popular stopover became known as Pine View Motel.

Years later the business belonged to a Mr. Payne, but at the time of his death the property had gone into serious decline. Then, early in 1981, five young entrepreneurs bought Pine View, but by the end of the first year only Vossie Vorster remained.

At first Vossie mainly accommodated groups of school children on educational tours while over a period of 15 years he expanded the Lodge into a Two Star establishment. The exclusive Honeymoon Suites with private spa bath became a firm favorite with newlyweds!

In 1996 the Lodge was awarded its first and very prestigious AA Annual Award for Best Leisure Hotel in South Africa!

The winter of 1996 however, proved to be a very testing time for Vossie and his staff. In July a forest fire destroyed much of the surrounding vegetation and burnt close enough to the property to damage fences and water pipes.

Vossie was deeply shaken, but a far greater fear realized itself on the 19th of August. A fire engulfed more than half the Lodge buildings and burnt them to ashes in a very short time! The kitchen, food stores, conference centre, reception and servants' quarters were all destroyed, fortunately no one was injured.

Since all the booking records also went up in flames, Vossie had no choice but to rebuild the Lodge before the Christmas holidays! The Lodge re-opened on the first of December, fully rebuilt, with an additional 5 luxury cabins. Soon after, this achievement by the Lodge Team was rewarded with their second AA Annual Award for Best Leisure Hotel in South Africa.

Vossie has since handed over the day-to-day operations to his top management couple, Chris and Irma. The recent involvement of his two daughters and son-in-law has allowed Vossie to finally enjoy the fruits of his hard labour.

Today the welcoming Tsitsikamma Lodge, in keeping with its past, still provides the traveller with a unique holiday or over-night experience.
